Twenty Exemplary Cases

18 - DULCE MAIA

Dulce Maia

WHEN - January/March, 1969

WHERE - Military Police Headquarters,
located at rua Abílio Soares, SP.

WHO -Dulce Maia,
30 years of age, theater producer;
Major Cavalcanti, Major Bismark;
Captain Pivato; Sergeants;
DOPS' investigators.

WHAT - Today Dulce says:
"What they wanted was not exactly
information. They tortured me just for
the pleasure of it, an expression of hate,
for several months after my imprisonment."

HOW - By beating, electrical shocks,
drops of water in the nose,
candle burnings, simulated
execution by a firing squad, etc.

WHY - For being a VPR's Activist
(Revolutionary Popular Vanguard)
she was allegedly accused of taking
part in the attack against the II
Army Headquarters, where a soldier
was killed; and also the attempt
that took the life of Captain Chandler,
American, while in a mission-visit
to the country. Dulce was later
found not guilty.

IT IS SAD TO SEE A
HUMAN BEING DOING THIS

"I was confined at the DOPS. Everty
morning they drove me to the P.E.
(Military Police) headquarters taking
me back to the DOPS in the middle of
the night. Back and forth every day.
They hung me upside down tied by
a rope; constant beating. Electrical
clubs. Punches. I was howling like
a wolf they would fill my mouth up
with rags. People came just to
watch, including Generals.

"They also used to tie me on my back,
on a bench having my head hanging
down while water dropped in my nose."

"They were conscious of what they
were doing. Professional employees
of a system they believe in. - It's sad
- she said - but the satisfaction of
going through so much torture, gave me
strength to bare my own imprisonment
and overcome all the psychological
effects. Psychologically I'm fine."
