I WAS FACING SOMETHING
VERY HARD TO FORGET...
"I was finally able to face the situation,
even though it was something almost
impossible to forget.
There were many torturers, both officers
and soldiers. Stuart, with an already torn
and brutalized skin, was dragged from
one side to the other of the patio,
tied to a police car; and from time
to time, was forced to breathe the toxic
fumes coming from an open car exhaust.
Throughout all of this there was a lot of
whipping and laughing from the torturers.
"One night, someone was brought
to a cell next to mine. Three phrases
were being repeated over and over again:
"Water", "I'm gonna die", "I'm going
crazy", "During the night, there were
many loud voices heard, much confusion
and cursing. The cell was opened and Stuart
was taken out, limp and lifeless, apparently
already dead."
(Letter from Alex Polari, detained
and tortured along with Stuart, sent to
Zuzu Angel in 1972.)
